Payroll Lead

Job Location: Christchurch / New Zealand

Deaf Education Aotearoa New Zealand is current the working title of a new organisation set to launch July 2020. It will provide deaf education and support services delivery across the whole of New Zealand. This new organisation will incorporate Kelston and Van Asch Deaf Education Centres. You will be joining a close-knit team and you will share their passion and enthusiasm for delivering high quality education and services to deaf community and whanau.

This is a new role based in Christchurch. You will carry out payroll process and cycle accurately and to deadlines. You will need to have a strong understanding of the Ministry of Education and New Zealand Payroll systems and requirements as well as Collective and Individual employment agreements we operate under. Novopay will be a system you are totally familiar with and therefore can utilise it to the benefit of the organisation. Continual improvement of all Payroll and related HR processes will be a key priority as will assisting others within the organisation understand and be prepared to take ownership of payroll related issues in their span of control. There are other Human Resources areas we would like this role to take on around the requirements of the payroll and these will be diverse and depend on interest and requirements at the time. As a small team we understand the need for us to take on other tasks as well so you will get exposed to broader HR issues as well. You will be an important member of the Human Resources team, and will have oversight of:

  • Transactional payroll issues
  • All related payroll compliance matters including, tax, legislation, employee entitlements and accurate application of collective and individual employment agreements.
  • Mapping all existing Business Processes and recommending and implementing improvements.
  • Systems and process as they evolve and change
  • Monitoring of Banked staff to assess usage
  • Reporting as required to inform executive decision making
  • Other HR issues including recruitment processing, developing employment agreements, surveying and reporting, managing annual staff study and scholarships.
  • Proven experience as a Senior in a payroll function
  • Understanding of the demands of a fast-paced and changing organisation
  • Strong business experience in payroll and associated roles
  • A passion for improving and streamlining related processes
  • Exceptional ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Proven experience with the interface with financial systems and teams
  • Adaptable and able to pick up new and evolving systems
  • Experience across broader HR issues and administration
  • Friendly and cheerful manner even during period of pressure
